The purpose of faculty mentoring is to support, facilitate, and enhance the development of faculty throughout the early and middle career stages. Johns Hopkins University is committed to the provision of mentoring to all junior faculty, and the development of divisional action plans that embrace core principles and encourage divisional experimentation. The statement of mentoring principles (below) is meant to serve as guidelines for mentoring programs across the university. Differences in structure, criteria for advancement, and culture across the schools will require the development of programs that differ in detail from each other. Nevertheless, the specifics of each program aim to meet the basic principles that underlie the purpose, goals, and value of mentoring.
Johns Hopkins University has established the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Mentoring to recognize the considerable amount of time, effort, and skills required for effective faculty mentoring. Nominations from faculty members, including self-nominations are accepted annually beginning March 1. Required materials must be submitted to firstname.lastname@example.org by 5 p.m. on March 31. As an institutional member, graduate students, post-doctoral associates, and faculty members from all ranks can enroll in a free individual membership to get access to the center’s online resources. All faculty members at Johns Hopkins are able to sign-up for an account to access the center’s online resources, including: webinars, multi-week courses, discussion forums, accountability matches, and career center, among others.
