Mathias Unberath Receives Google Research Scholar Program Award
Mathias Unberath, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and core faculty member in the Laboratory for Computational Sensing and Robotics and the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare, has been selected to receive a Google Research Scholar Program Award.
This award, given annually to about 75 early career researchers worldwide across 16 subject areas, will provide a gift to support the advancement of Mathias’ research. His proposal, “Assuring Image-based Surgical Autonomy with Human-in-the-loop Designs,” was chosen in the Health Research category and aims to improve our understanding of image-based surgical navigation systems through explainable machine learning techniques and gaze-tracking to better understand how users interact with complex information. Overall, the research will advance our understanding of how to assure image-based surgical autonomy by enabling humans to make better decisions.
Through his Advanced Robotics and Computationally AugmenteD Environments (ARCADE) Lab, his work advances healthcare by creating collaborative intelligent systems that support clinical workflows. Through synergistic research on imaging, computer vision, machine learning, and interaction design, he builds human-centered solutions that are embodied in emerging technology such as mixed reality and robotics.
Please join us in congratulating Mathias on this outstanding recognition of his work.
