Dr. Rachel Marie E. Salas is the Director of The Johns Hopkins Provost’s L.A.D. Academy Early-Career Program Portfolios. Dr. Salas is a Professor in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins Medicine, with a joint appointment in the School of Nursing. As the Director of L.A.D. Academy Early-Career Program Portfolios, Dr. Salas works with the Office of the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs team, specifically to help support L.A.D. programs for early career faculty and post-graduate learners. 

Dr. Salas earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed her Internal Medicine internship and Neurology residency. After her chief year, she pursued a sleep medicine fellowship in Baltimore before joining the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins in 2008. Dr. Salas obtained a Master of Medical Education from the Johns Hopkins School of Education in 2018. She is board-certified in Sleep Medicine and Neurology. Dr. Salas holds the positions of Assistant Medical Director and Director of Ambulatory Sleep Services at the Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep and Wellness. 

For over a decade, Dr. Salas has served as the Director of the Neurology Clerkship, exemplifying her dedication to shaping the education and training of future health care professionals. In addition, she holds leadership positions in prominent organizations, including the Chair of the Undergraduate Education Subcommittee for the American Academy of Neurology and an executive member of the Alliance for Clinical Education. She has also made significant contributions to interprofessional education as the former director of Interprofessional Education and Collaborative Practice for the School of Medicine at Johns Hopkins. She is a capstone advisor for the Johns Hopkins School of Education Master of Education in the Health Professions program as well. 

Dr. Salas, a certified coach, is a trailblazer in program development at Johns Hopkins University. She is the visionary behind significant initiatives such as the Johns Hopkins Osler Apprenticeship Program and the Johns Hopkins PreDoc Program, tailoring experiences for senior medical students and aspiring clinicians, respectively. Dr. Salas has played a pivotal role in creating the Johns Hopkins GME Interprofessional Distinction Track, focusing on Health Systems Science and Health Humanities. Notably, she initiated and co-directed the [Health Professions Educator]^ personalized coaching professional development program, showcasing her expertise in personalized coaching. Additionally, she led the JH [PreCollege]^ Leadership Internship for high school students, further highlighting her commitment to personalized mentorship and education at various academic levels. 

She has numerous scholarly works in sleep medicine research, medical education, and academic career development. Dr. Salas’s scholarly pursuits revolve around Health Systems Science, particularly emphasizing Teaming, Leadership, and Change Agency from a clinical and educational perspective. Her additional certifications as a life coach and strengths coach allow her to effectively connect with and support individuals in her educational mission and clinical practice. Dr. Salas’s contributions and expertise have garnered prestigious recognition and accolades. She was honored as a Josiah Macy Scholar from 2019 to 2021, an AMA Health Systems Science Scholar from 2019 to 2020, and a 2021-22 AΩA Leadership Fellow. She was inducted into The Johns Hopkins Distinguished Teaching Society in 2021 and received the Alpha Omega Alpha Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award in 2022. Additionally, in 2023, she was granted The Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award, solidifying her reputation as an exceptional educator and leader.
