Charlene Gamaldo Associate Vice Provost of the Provost's Leadership Advancement & Development Academy
Dr. Charlene Gamaldo is the inaugural Associate Vice Provost of the Provost’s Leadership Advancement & Development Academy (a.k.a L.A.D.). Dr. Gamaldo is a Professor of Neurology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine with joint appointments in psychiatry and behavioral sciences and anesthesiology – critical care. She is currently the Vice Chair of Faculty Development in Neurology, the Medical Director of the JH Center for Sleep and Wellness, and the former co-clerkship Director for Neurology. The L.A.D. Academy will support the development of JHU faculty across the academic enterprise with university-wide access to vetted professional development resources and new provost-sponsored leadership cohort programs. The L.A.D. Academy will also serve as a resource to support the efforts of existing faculty development programs offered across the university. We are excited to leverage Dr. Gamaldo’s 18+ years in her roles as trainee, educator, program builder, clinician, and researcher at JHU to realize the L.A.D. Academy mission of developing a faculty development resource roadmap that serves the professional development needs of all members of our academic faculty community.
Dr. Gamaldo received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Virginia, she earned her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine, and after completing her neurology residency at the University of North Carolina Hospital, she became the first neurology sleep fellow at Johns Hopkins in 2004. Since joining the Johns Hopkins faculty, her career accomplishments reflect her passion and pursuit of excellence across the JHU pillars of teaching, mentorship, research, and clinical care. She has over 122 scholarly works in the areas of sleep medicine research, medical education, and academic career development. In recognition of her contributions, Dr. Gamaldo has received awards in domains of research discovery, education, clinical care, and leadership, including the American Academy of Neurology – Sleep Science Award, The JHU Institute of Excellence -Educator Scholarship Award (IEE), The American Academy of Neurology – Educator Innovation Award, The American Academy of Sleep – Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Award, and Top Doc nods in the Baltimore Magazine and Washington Post.
