The President’s Ten for One strategic framework sets out ten new goals for Johns Hopkins University through 2030 under four organizing pillars: One University, Individual and Collective Excellence, Knowledge and Impact, and Community Partnership and Economic Opportunity for Baltimore and the other communities of which we are a part. Each month we will highlight a goal and share some of the ways that we can advance our professional growth related to the university’s strategic mission.

Goal #5: Honor our legacy as the nation’s first research university by developing ambitious reforms so that every graduate student and postdoctoral fellow receives an experience that is rigorous, innovative, and tailored to their career aspirations.

As at our founding, we will be the place that dares to transform—with courage and determination—graduate education. We will:
1. Initiate across-university commission aimed at the renewal and reimagination of PhD education and training at Johns Hopkins.
2. Create purposeful and mentored educational and professional pathways for our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
3. Make our graduate and postdoctoral programs an area of priority for funding and experimentation.

Being an exceptional mentor for our graduate students is a fundamental way for faculty to support this goal. Academic Impressions has a 90 minute course called Making the Most of Mentoring: Best Practices and Core Principles for Mentors and Mentees. Leadership Competency #5: Acting with Integrity

A leader who meets this competency interacts with others in a way that is seen as direct and truthful. They ensure confidence in individual and organizational motives and representations. They act in a way that is consistent with personal and organizational values by keeping confidences, promises, and commitments. They clearly state goals and beliefs; inform people of their true intentions; do what they say they will do; and follow through on commitments.
