Dr. Cooper regarding her scholarship at JHU: My research has documented the influences of patient-physician communication on health outcomes among African Americans and people from other marginalized communities. I’m now leading clinical trials that test programs to reduce racial and income health disparities. I’ve also used my clinical and research expertise to inform evidence-based policy recommendations, and I currently serve on the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, also known as PCAST. Writing my book, “Why Are Health Disparities Everyone’s Problem?” (2021, Johns Hopkins Press) for a broad audience enriched my thinking about the links between policies, living conditions, health inequities and societal issues such as public trust in science and civic engagement, and inspired me to develop new research questions.
The President’s Ten for One strategic framework sets out ten new goals for Johns Hopkins University through 2030 under four organizing pillars: One University, Individual and Collective Excellence, Knowledge and Impact, and Community Partnership and Economic Opportunity for Baltimore and the other communities of which we are a part. Each month we will highlight a goal and share some of the ways that we can advance our professional growth related to the university’s strategic mission.
Goal #3: Deepen our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to fostering a culture of dialogue and engagement that models the best of a pluralistic society.
At Johns Hopkins, we are committed to being leaders in harnessing data-driven, research-based practices to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. In pursuit of this ideal, we will:
1. Implement the ambitious goals set out in the Second Roadmap on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
2. Deepen our work to reexamine our history and celebrate the diverse voices that constitute Johns Hopkins.
3. Cultivate a culture of dialogue, engagement, and multiplicity of ideas that honors the ideals of civic discourse and searching inquiry that are core to our academic mission, and that refuses to marginalize those whose ideas challenge us.
JHU’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion has a catalog of summer educational offerings to expand your skills in Inclusive Excellence. Explore the live and online offerings on the IEED website.
JHU Talent Management has identified 6 Leadership Skill Domains that we consider essential for effective leaders. Each month we will highlight one domain, what success looks like, and opportunities to grow our skills in that domain.
Leadership Competency #3: Inspiring and Motivating Others
A leader who meets this competency provides guidance and feedback to help other strengthen knowledge/skills needed to accomplish tasks, solve problems, and perform effectively. They guide and support the professional development of individuals so that they can fulfill future job/role responsibilities, define career goals, and establish development plans to achieve them. These leaders give people constructive, developmental feedback and advice. They invest time and resources into building the capabilities of their team members.
JHU Learning Solutions is hosting a 3 hour session called “Keeping Your Team Engaged, Happy & Performing at their Peak.” This session provides attendees with practical tools, techniques, and actionable strategies that you can implement immediately to keep your team engaged, happy, and performing at their peak, day in and day out.
